Dear parishioners and friends of our parish,
If you’ve seen the recent news coverage of the unspeakable suffering that the people of Haiti are experiencing, and the extreme poverty that the people of Afghanistan are living through these days under the Taliban rule, you’ll no doubt be as horrified as I am. These two countries have become truly the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
Thousands of innocent children and families in those lands are facing an unimaginable tragedy, combining the deadly dangers of natural disaster and war with the horrors of poverty, Covid–19 pandemic and near starvation. Several priests who became my friends during the time when I served as a volunteer in Haiti and the Dominican Republic twenty years ago have kept me informed of these heart–breaking situations. I learned that so many people there are so deeply wounded and malnourished that they don’t even have the energy to cry. They remind me of what my own family went through in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.
It has been difficult for the Church in those two countries to respond to the overwhelming needs of the people with their limited resources. In our own diocese and parish, there are families with deep personal ties to Haiti and Afghanistan, and they are asking us to join them in these worthy causes.
Many of you have already been generous with your weekly contributions. Your generosity empowers the Church to preach the Gospel, make disciples, and support others in our community who need help. We are grateful for the many ways in which you are answering the cry of the needy. Another way that you could help the poor, especially in these circumstances, is by dropping donations into the poor boxes located on the wall by the doors of our church. You may want to consider the poor box as part of your weekly worship experience. If you have unused coins or pocket change cluttering up your homes, please donate them for this purpose as well. The St. Vincent de Paul Society of our parish will use these extra funds to offer immediate assistance to the families in need.
We earnestly appreciate your ongoing support as valued members of our church family. Be assured that your financial support, in every creative way, is making a difference in someone’s life. Together, let us show the compassion of Christ and the courtesy of our great nation to the brothers and sisters who are most in need right now.

Queridos feligreses y amigos de nuestra parroquia,
Si ha visto la cobertura de noticias recientes sobre el sufrimiento indescriptible que está
pasando el pueblo de Haití y la pobreza extrema que vive el pueblo de Afganistán en estos días bajo el gobierno de los talibanes, sin duda estarán tan horrorizado como yo. Estos dos países se han convertido verdaderamente en la peor crisis humanitaria del mundo.
Miles de niños y familias inocentes en esas tierras se enfrentan a una tragedia inimaginable que combina los peligros mortales de los desastres naturales y la guerra con los horrores de pobreza & hambre y además la pandemia de Covid-19. Varios sacerdotes que se hicieron mis
amigos durante el tiempo en que me desempeñé como voluntario en Haití y la República |Dominicana hace veinte años me han mantenido informado de estas situaciones
desgarradoras. Aprendí que hay tanta gente tan profundamente herida y desnutrida que ni siquiera tienen energía para llorar. Me recuerdan lo que pasó mi propia familia después de la guerra de Vietnam.
Ha sido difícil para la Iglesia en esos dos países responder a las abrumadoras necesidades de la gente con sus limitados recursos. En nuestra propia diócesis y parroquia, hay familias con profundos vínculos personales con Haití y Afganistán, y nos piden que nos unamos a ellos en estas dignas causas.
Muchos de ustedes ya han sido generosos con sus contribuciones semanales. Tu
generosidad empodera a la Iglesia para predicar el Evangelio, hacer discípulos y apoyar a
otros en nuestra comunidad que necesita ayuda. Estamos agradecidos por las muchas formas en que está respondiendo al grito de los necesitados. Otra forma en que podrías ayudar a los pobres, especialmente en estas circunstancias, es depositando las donaciones en las cajas
para pobres ubicadas en la pared junto a las puertas de nuestra iglesia. Es posible que desee considerar la caja de los pobres como parte de su experiencia de adoración semanal. Si tiene monedas sin usar o cambio de bolsillo abarrotando sus casas, por favor dónelos también para este propósito. La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul de nuestra parroquia utilizará estos fondos adicionales para ofrecer asistencia inmediata a las familias necesitadas.
